Tirana is regarded as the capital city of beautiful Albania. It houses a lot of wonderful historical sights, government institutions and elegant hotels.

Tirana is a relatively new city founded in 1614 by Mulleti’s Sulejman Pasha. By the turn o the 18th to the 19th century, the city grew to become Albania’s capital. Up to now, most establishments in the city have evidences of the Italian cultural descent. In fact, Italian architects and planners built the city’s Main Square after Scanderbeg, their national hero.

Tirana is also the center of economic and political stature in the country. Local attractions in Tirana include the Clock Tower, National Library, National Historical Museum and The National Opera and Ballet Theater. For night life, all you need top do is to look for Blloku within a vegetation area where communist elites formerly lived. The area has a number of pubs, bars, night clubs and cafes.

When visiting Tirana, here are some hotels you can stay in:

Sheraton Tirana Hotel & Towers

This hotel is the only International five star hotel in Albania. It is equipped with luxurious furnishings and modern amenities. Located in the central part of Tirana, Sheraton puts you in close proximity to the zoo, artificial lakes, the National Park, and banking districts. The Embassy, Presidential Palace and Congress are also near the hotel.

Sheraton has an Infinity Bar that serves refreshments, coffee and cocktails as well as the Metropolitan Restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinners. Other facilities and amenities include a 24hrs front desk, room services, car rental and tour services along with aerobic classes, massage treatments, fitness facilities and an outdoor pool among others.

The hotel has a total of 151 elegant rooms with 56 sophisticated suites. Each room is guaranteed with deluxe bath amenities, air conditioners, rollaway beds, adjoining rooms, coffee makers, Cable channels and in-room safes. They also have a VIP room and non-smoking units.

Rogner EuropaPark Hotel

Albanian hospitality, attractive architecture, 1st class services and world class services are everything that makes up this hotel. Being considered as one of the most exclusive hotels in Tirana, it has garnered the ranks of a 5-star facility. Its location along Tirana’s Main Boulevard places this hotel on the center of local businesses and government offices. This would include the Presidential Palace, Embassies and other ministry buildings.

The hotel has a total of 137 elegantly furnished rooms that assure relaxing views of their Mediterranean-styled gardens and swimming pools. Each room is also equipped with hair dryers, air conditioners, toilet and baths, Satellite TVs and high speed Internet access. This is along with a business desk, electronic keycard and safe deposit boxes.

With all other business hotels looking very much alike and offering the same deals and facilities, EuroPark stands out from the rest. Regarded as “The Garden Hotel,” it lives up to its reputation because of the beautiful natural landscapes it features.

Aside from conference facilities that has state-of-the-art equipments like overhead projectors, screen, Internet access and flip charts among others, the hotel boasts of its Apollonia Restaurant which serves Old Austrian and local cuisines to International delicacies. For snacks and drinks by the pool terrace, you will have a grand time at the Pirro Bar-Cafe.
Theranda Hotel

This four star hotel is deemed as the newest boutique hotel in the region. Only a short 2 minutes from the capital’s central, it is noted for its passion for word class service. Set along Blloku, the city’s capital, Theranda is a tasteful transformation that depicts how much the city has prospered when it comes to its Tourism.

Theranda has a total of 14 rooms, where in, there are 5 twin bed rooms, 4 Junior Suites and 5 double rooms. All these rooms are non-smoking and furnished elegantly. Each room is equipped with Internet access, telephones, key cards, TVs, mini-bars, air conditioners and hair dryers.

Flashpack the Yasawa Islands – Fiji

April 29, 2009

Lacing their way up the west coast of Fiji, the Yasawas are a chain of 20 ancient islands famous for crystal blue lagoons, rugged volcanic landscapes, abundant sunshine and some of the Pacific’s most ethereal beaches. They’re the big sister of the Mamanucas; grander in size and stature, sparsely populated and just what the doctor ordered for leaving civilisation and its consternations behind. Most of the people live in small isolated villages and have their own distinct dialect, which is known as Vuda. Technology is an enigma and any stay will nudge you surreptitiously into the true meaning of ‘Fiji time’.

Snorkelling, swimming and diving are avidly pursued owing to wide banks of coral around most of the islands. Ample peaks ranging from grassy hills to jungle climbs also provide spectacular hiking and views from some of the summits take in the whole chain from north to south.

After the famous mutiny on the Bounty in 1789, Captain William Bligh paddled through the island group on his way to Timor. His longboat was chased along by Fijian canoes.

Backpacker lodges have dominated accommodation options in the Yasawas for many years but a new wave of midrange and top-end options are making appearances, so families and couples looking for creature comforts and pampering are now well-catered for. You can prebook packages to the Yasawas but unless you’re travelling in peak season or with kids in need of facilities it’s not essential to have all your accommodation tied up before you head out. Many of the backpacker resorts go through ebbs and flows of quality and you’ll get your best advice from travellers on the Yasawa Flyer.

Beware of the Moving Dance Floor at The Rio’s New Nightclub

April 28, 2009

Every hotel and casino in Las Vegas has at least one big-name nightclub that pulls in celebrity guests, gets constant tabloid media ink and has a dreadfully long line every Friday and Saturday night. Caesars has Pure, The Venetian has Tao, Hard Rock has Body English, Luxor has LAX and so on. But the poor Rio Las Vegas hasn’t really had a nightclub worthy of press and celebrities – until now, that is.

The oddly-named ND’s The Club is a multi-level club venue that promises “interactive productions” and “sensory experiences.” And want to reiterate that this is a club, not some sort of intimate space a la Tryst at The Wynn. ND’s is a menagerie of bars (six in total), dancers in elaborate costumes, VIP booths made of red alligator leather and Vodka-RockStar drinking partiers out on the dance floor. Except this dance floor is a bit different.

A few times during the night, the floor is lowered into the basement of ND’s where dancers take their places. Then the floor is elevated back into the club and high-energy salsa dances are performed. The dance floor can even go 10 feet above ground level, so the dancers have all eyes on them as they dance above everyone.

And don’t worry, the club’s staff clears out the floor before they lower it into the basement. No chance of getting lost in the basement here.

There are also tons of dizzying lights, speakers, and giant LCD screens throughout the club. If that wasn’t enough, a light projector uses thermal imaging to flash images along the walls. They say the screens never show the same thing twice. We’re not so sure if the choreography’s on repeat but the dancers move so fast, you probably won’t really be able to tell.

Keeping with the club’s Latin “en fuego” feel, Cuban-American rapper and reggaeton star Pitbull will be playing there on May 8th.  by Stephanie Sims – VegasChatter

ND’s The Club is open Wednesday through Saturday nights beginning at 10 pm. For VIP table reservations, call 702-339-4939.

Be Inspired in Florence, Italy

April 24, 2009

The Cradle of the Renaissance Era. For many, Florence is synonym to style both in its glorious past and today’s Italian fashion. Commerce and culture, art and science, industry and craft, this is a city where every aspect of humanity is represented in excellence.

Boutique Hotels in Florence

Known for the contribution of its citizens to the Arts and Sciences, Florence is a place that delights its visitors. Their legacy can be admired in its museums, Galleria degli Uffizi, one of the largest museums of the world, Galleria dell’Accademia, where the famous David by Michelangelo is located, churches and cathedrals, Orsanmichele, Duomo – Santa Maria del Fiore and Baptistery – two of the oldest monuments of Florence, and squares, Piazza della Signoria, one of the political hubs of Florence for centuries where many famous sculptures are located. Step back into a Fiat and Vespa-filled Renaissance.

Best Green Hotels in the U.S. for Earth Day

April 22, 2009

Happy Earth Day! When we first did our Best Green Hotels report back in 2007, greening hotels was still sort of a new phenomenon. That was back when few hotels were moving past the little notes on the nightstand asking you to help conserve energy (and money) by only asking for new towels and sheets as needed.

But these days, hotels across America are seeking LEED certifications, introducing sustainable restaurants, in-room recycling programs and other environmentally-friendly initiatives. We’ve long been chronicling that sort of “green” news here, but in honor of Earth Day, we’d like to spotlight five U.S. hotels that really stand out as one shade greener than the rest.

1. The Juicer: The Charles Hotel
The Charles Hotel recently introduced its very own Juice Bar, a charging station for hybrid and electric cars. When we hit it up yesterday, there wasn’t much juice action going on — but here’s how it will work when ready:

Two separate parking stalls will be equipped with dual charging outlets, featuring a GFI protected outlet with 50/60 AMP, 240 volt and 20 AMP, 120 volt service, which will electrically charge cars between two to four hours. As an added service, The “Juice Bar” will keep an extensive inventory of back-up adapters on hand for popular EV models for guests who may have left theirs behind.

The hotel’s parking garage will also provide special parking rates based upon each vehicle’s actual size using the nanoMAX small-car detection system. So if you drive a Prius or a SmartCar, you’ll score a much cheaper rate than, say, Eminem, who will be rolling up in his massive Tahoe.

Later this spring, the hotel will launch its Hotel Bike Program with the introduction of a fleet of six Electra Amsterdam Classic Bicycles equipped with shopping baskets. The bikes will be free for all hotel guests. Rates start at $199 a night.

2. The Treehugger: St. Julien
In the environmentally-friendly enclave of Boulder, Colo. a hotel really has to go above and beyond the normal green practices to get special notice. The St. Julien already has in place a Zero Waste commitment by 2010, a policy not to use leather products in its public areas or guest rooms, and a Green Team, that meets weekly to discuss new green initiatives as well as manage current environmental programs.

But today, the hotel really stands out from the rest. St. Julien will plant a tree on behalf of all the guests visiting the hotel today, including guests at the Spa at St. Julien, diners at Jill’s and barflies at the T-zero Bar. Working with the Arbor Day Foundation, the trees donated by St Julien will specifically repopulate nearby Rocky Mountain forest areas that have been affected by beetle kill and forest fire.

But it doesn’t end there. St Julien will also plant a tree for every new “fan” who joins their Facebook page today.
Rates start at $299 a night.

3. The Luxurious Hippie: Montage Beverly Hills
The Montage Beverly Hills’ first green step came before the hotel was even built, when the plans that were drawn up called for a public garden. Today, that 28,500 square-foot garden is open to anyone, not just guests who can cough up the $495 room rate. But beyond the creation of a beautiful mini-park, the hotel was earth-conscious in its construction, recycling 83 percent of construction waste from the building site.

Indoors, the hotel has used eco-friendly and low-VOC paints, sealants and adhesives, efficient lighting systems and specific seasonal temperature and humidity controls. The hotel has also implemented a green housekeeping program and a Reduce, Reuse and Recycle program, among many other practices.

And because of all these efforts, the hotel nabbed a Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED for New Construction rating system. Oh and did we mention this is a luxury hotel in the middle of everything that screams “excess” in Beverly Hills?  Being green here doesn’t have to mean sleeping on hemp and wearing Teva sandals.
Rates start at $395 a night.

4. The Green Business Traveler: Element Hotels
Designed to appeal to the business traveler who is both eco-conscious and budget-conscious, Starwood’s relatively new brand Element Hotels lays claim to the distinction of being the first hotel chain to mandate that all its properties obtain LEED certification.

Without sacrificing the sweet luxuries of Starwood comforts — the Westin Heavenly Bed and “spa-like” bathrooms, for instance — Element goes the distance, right down to replacing traditional paper “Do Not Disturb” signs with more eco-friendly magnets. The hotel boasts energy efficient appliances and lighting, water-efficient faucets and fixtures and easy in-room recycling receptacles. Filtered water in guest rooms, amenity dispensers in the showers (instead of mini plastic bottles) and green building materials are also major talking points for the chain. Finally, guests rolling up in hybrid cars get priority parking.

Four properties are open in cities like Lexington and Houston, with several more on the way in the coming months.
Rates start at around $125 a night.

5. The Salvager: The Bardessono
The newest hotel in Napa Valley is completely up-front about how green it is, detailing nearly every aspect of its creation from start to finish here — and it’s aiming for a Platinum LEED certification. What’s most admirable is the tree-saving that happened in the process of building the hotel — not tree-killing.

Salvaged Monterey Cypress has been milled into siding used on the exterior of several buildings. These are trees that otherwise would have been ground up or burned. Walnut trees that were pulled out by farmers at the end of their production life have been milled into the hotel’s flooring, rather than being burned. Veneers of the Walnut grace the entry doors into the guest rooms and to several public rooms. Redwood recycled from wine casks has been used on the ceilings of some of the public spaces within the hotel, and on several public room doors. Salvaged California Bay trees have become cut slabs for the desks in the guest rooms. The large tables in the public areas and dining room tables have all come from salvaged trees.

More green practices include: 940 solar panels that provide most of the hotel’s electricity demands, 200-sq.ft. of glass in each room to allow for natural lighting, guest beds outfitted with organic linens and comprehensive recycling and composting programs.

Perhaps the biggest green nod of them all? Toyota chose Bardessono as the location for their latest Prius press launch.
Rates start at $500 a night.  by HotelChatter

Wet Republic Waives The $500 Cabana Fee for Lauren Conrad

April 21, 2009

Last week we told you what to expect when you hit up Wet Republic at MGM Grand, Vegas’ uber-club for the bikini-clad. The pool officially opened Saturday, with Lauren Conrad of “The Hills” serving as hostess. She walked the red carpet in pool party-appropriate garb wearing a rose-colored tie dye dress and flip-flops and thankfully, without any mascara running down her face.

While TMZ mocked LC for staying in her cabana playing Wii, that was surely part of the deal. Poolside cabanas in Vegas are in a hotly contested war to see who can offer the latest gadgets and toys in these pricey respites from the shade. Just how pricey are they? Cabanas start at $500. Bungalows at Wet Republic start at $750. Yes, you will need “Hills” cash to rent these babies out.

Meanwhile, classy lady Mandy Moore kicked off the 2009 TAO Beach season. The Las Vegas Sun reported that the Venetian-based pool club also hosted a bevy of other celebrities, including Reggie Bush (sans Kim K) and randomly, Owen Wilson.

Rounding out the weekend’s poolside festivities, Snoop Dogg performed at the always-rowdy Rehab at the The Hard Rock on Sunday. Whether the well-lubed crowd will even remember their close encounter with the Doggfather today, however, is anybody’s guess.

Richard Branson Invents New Sport: Kite Surfing With Naked Lady

April 20, 2009

Draping himself with naked ladies is all in a day’s work for Virgin founder Richard Branson. For a photoshoot on Necker Island, his private paradise in — where else? — the British Virgin Islands, Branson posed kite surfing while draped with model Denni Parkinson. What’s amazing is that he still seems to be focused on the surfing bit.

In another photo in the series, Branson appears in a white buttondown in the forest while Parkinson stands behind him au naturale. She also happens to be the photographer’s girlfriend, according to the Daily Mail, but the British tabs aren’t giving Richard a free pass on this, even though he claims his children were watching from the shore. In the same week, Branson also reportedly clashed with Virgin-sponsored Formula 1 driver Jenson Button over his paying too much attention to Button’s girlfriend, Japanese-Argentine underwear model Jessica Michibata. No wonder Branson’s next trip was to a surprise birthday party for his dad in Scotland — nothing untoward-looking about that.

We were unable to figure out exactly why Branson is posing with a naked girl, but the lesson here is clear: Do your nudist outdoor activities with your significant other, not away from him or her. Branson oughta British Naturism, a club for people who like being outdoors in the altogether with activities like a paddleboat trip in Norfolk, a July 4 fun run and of course several beach days. Imagine a crowd of seacombers wearing a Virgin towel and a smile…
